Switching off 3G Data

Below you’ll find all the information you might find helpful on the 3G switch off.

A summary of
the 3g switch off

All major mobile network operators across the world have committed to phase out their 3G networks.

In the UK, EE has already initiated the switch-off process so they can focus on strengthening newer and more reliable 4G and 5G networks, giving a better connectivity experience to users on their network.

plan.com O2 customers remain unaffected for now but they will begin the phased switch-off in 2025.

What does this mean for customers?

Any plan.com customers connected to the EE infrastructure who are still using a 3G device that lacks support for 4G or 5G may encounter limitations such as the inability to access data.

That means they will no longer be able to access the internet or messaging apps like WhatsApp through the 3G network. However, customers may retain the ability to make and receive calls, as well as send texts via 2G.

What can we do?

If customers already have a 4G or 5G device, they don’t need to do anything. However, if they’re using a device that doesn’t support 4G or 5G and wish to continue to access data, they should look to upgrade their device.

When will 3G be switched off?

The switch-off is happening in phases, which started last year (July 2023), below you’ll find a list of locations and turn off dates.

West Midlands (containing Birmingham)23rd Jan 2024

Frequently asked questions

3G (which stands for 3rd Generation) lets customers make and receive calls and texts, and access basic data services to get online. 4G and 5G are faster and more reliable technologies than 3G, giving users a much better mobile experience.

Although 2G remains for now, we do plan to switch it off later in the decade. In fact, all UK networks are looking to close both 2G and 3G over the next decade. While 2G remains, you’ll still be able to place calls and send texts over the 2G network if your device doesn’t let you use the 4G/5G network, but not data.

The switch off isn’t just happening in the UK. 3G networks are being switched off across the world – meaning that if the device doesn’t support 4G or 5G, then they may not be able to make calls or use data roaming while abroad.
